I had one of those 40% Off Any One Regular-Priced Item coupons for Michaels that I forgot to use on my last excursion, so I had to stop today. (Sigh. I really need to lay off the shopping until I get a job.)
I picked up a set of #8 double-pointed needles, a bottle of varnish, a pencil sharpener, krazy glue, and a block of Sculpey. But the coolest thing came when I was searching the store for dowels (yup, to make my own needles). I finally found them, then came across packs of 10+ dowels in various diameters, already cut to 12" lengths. I almost bought at least two packs, due to my inability to choose sizes, when I saw this:
...okay, I can't find an image, and no camera stealage today, but Forster's had this lovely tube of 50 dowels, in assorted sizes from 1/8" (approx. size 5) to 5/8" (approx. size huge). For $10! And, when I handed the cashier my coupon, I sighed about how it was probably going towards the cheapest item. She looked at me, kind of bewildered, and replied, "No, it applies to the most expensive item." Score! 50 dowels for $6... can't beat that.
I also came thisclose to buying Craft, Inc. at the bookstore today. It mentioned things I've never thought of before - like business licenses and taxes. Yikes. I took the quick entrepreneurial quiz in it, though; it was one of those ten-question quizzes where if you get more than five answers right you're entrepreneurial material, and I got nine.
...Hmm.
I think I'm on to something here.

Ooh, that's a good idea. (Re: using wooden dowels for diy needles. And going the entrepreneur too, but I don't have a question on that. :^P Onto that:)
Per diameter, how many different "needles" could you make? I need dpns in size 9 and above.
You mean, how many needles per length of dowel? Depends on the dowel. I would guess that the 12" lengths can make one straight or two dpns. The longer ones that you buy individually, I have no idea.
